a few words about arts and education  –

The Arts are an essential part of public education. From dance and music to theatre and the visual arts, the arts give children a unique means of expression, capturing their passions and emotions, and allowing them to explore new ideas, subject matter, and cultures. They bring us joy in every aspect of our lives.

Arts education not only enhances students’ understanding of the world around them, but it also broadens their perspective on traditional academics. The arts give us the creativity to express ourselves, while challenging our intellect. The arts integrate life and learning for all students and are integral in the development of the whole person.

“The Arts communicate and speak to us in ways that teach literacy and enhance our lives. We must continue to find a place for arts programs and partnerships not only for what it teaches students about art, but for what it teaches us all about the world we live in.”

–Dr. Terry Bergeson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington State, November 2001

let the play continue…a few words about our operations and how you can join us!

Tree House Youth Theatre is a not-for-profit, charitable organization with a parent volunteer board and two part-time contractors: an Artistic Director and a Program Administrator.

We  strive to create a dynamic learning experience for our participants by hiring professional crew and staff. To do so takes energy, dedication and a not insignificant financial commitment. Tree House raises money through enrollment fees, grants from the City of Red Deer, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and through Alberta Gaming in the form of casinos and raffles.  We are always open to partnerships with businesses, service groups and individuals who believe, as we do, that support of the arts is support for not only an individual child, but the community and society as a whole.

Mission and Mandate
Tree House Youth Theatre is dedicated to providing accessible and affordable opportunities for drama, movement, and vocal experiences for youth to age 17 in the City of Red Deer and surrounding area.

We believe personal growth and achievement is fostered by planning, promoting, and organizing activities, providing performance opportunities, and facilitating youth theatre education that is not always available through the school system.

Goals of Our Organization
Tree House Youth Theatre seeks to be a model for excellence in theatre. We strive to lead in theatre training that encompasses all aspects of the craft including, but not limited to: acting, movement, voice, puppetry, mime, and clowning, as well as generating initiatives for using theatre in education and community development and outreach.

We Believe
Young people embody complex realities, imagination and possibility, and their concerns must be central to our programming choices.

Young people have the power to know the world and to transform it. The mentoring of young people is a key responsibility of Tree House Youth Theatre.

We are part of a larger world and our theatre has a responsibility to illuminate connections, build bridges, and celebrate diverse cultures.

Theatre must encourage the power of imagination and critical thinking.

Artists must be valued and provided with the tools to achieve excellence and realize their vision.

We do our best work when all are involved as collaborators in the pursuit of the artistic vision.

We must be attentive stewards of our resources.

We must embrace the fundamental attributes of young people: curiosity, risk taking, candor and imagination.
